How to Get Permanent Residency in Belize: Step-by-Step Guide for Expats

← Back to Insights

Belize is one of the most welcoming countries in Central America, with liberal visa and residency requirements that make it attractive to tourists, retirees, and real estate investors alike. Before planning your move, it’s important to understand the visa rules, residency process, and citizenship pathways that apply to foreigners.

Belize Visa Requirements

All visitors to Belize must present the following upon arrival:

  • A valid passport with at least six months before expiration.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support your stay.
  • A return ticket or proof of onward travel.

Eligible visitors receive a 30-day tourist visa on entry. If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for a visa extension through the Immigration Department in Belize City, Belmopan, or your local district office.

Residency in Belize

While Belize once offered an “economic citizenship” program, this was discontinued in 2002. Today, foreigners looking to live in Belize long-term must apply for permanent residency.

Permanent Residency Requirements

  • Must reside in Belize for at least one continuous year on a tourist visa.
  • Pay a one-time residency fee:
    • $1,000 USD for U.S. and Canadian citizens.
    • Varies for citizens of other countries, based on origin.

To apply, you’ll need to submit the following to the Immigration Department:

  • Completed residency application form.
  • Police record from your home country.
  • Medical records from a Belizean physician.
  • Recent bank statements proving financial stability.
  • Two passport-sized photos, signed by you and countersigned by a Justice of the Peace in Belize.

Once granted, permanent residency allows you to:

  • Apply for a Belize driver’s license.
  • Travel freely in and out of the country.
  • Begin the path to citizenship.

Becoming a Citizen of Belize

To qualify for Belizean citizenship, you must:

  1. Hold permanent residency status.
  2. Prove five years of legal residence in Belize.

Citizenship benefits extend to your spouse and minor children, making Belize an excellent choice for families considering relocation.

The Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) Program

Belize also offers a special residency program for retirees, known as the Qualified Retired Persons Program (QRP).

QRP Eligibility

  • Minimum age: 45 years old.
  • Proof of a minimum income of $2,000 USD per month from a pension, annuity, or Social Security (from outside Belize).

QRP Benefits

  • Tax exemptions on income earned outside Belize.
  • Import duty exemptions on personal belongings, vehicles, and even boats.
  • A flexible residency option without the need for permanent residency.

This program is especially popular with retirees from the U.S., Canada, and Europe, who are drawn to Belize’s relaxed lifestyle, English-speaking environment, and affordable cost of living.
